The Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community (EAC) was signed in Arusha on 30 November 1999. This organisation aims to develop policies and programmes for widening and deepening co-operation among partners in political, economic, social and cultural fields, research and technology, defence, security and legal and judicial affairs.
It has developed work on different sectors and achieved great contributions. Its major areas are: Agriculture (highlights for the prevention and control of transboundary animal diseases, livestock policy initiative, pastoralist and dry land development); Corporate Communications and Public Affairs; Customs Union; Education, Culture and Sports, for example,- Inter-University Council for East Africa; Energy, for example, East African Power Master Plan; Gender and Youth, Community Development, for example, Regional Gender and Community Development Strategy and Programme; Infrastructure, for example, East African Road Network Projectand East African Railways Master Plan Study; Investment; Peace and Security; Public Health (HIV/AIDS, Influenza); Tourism and Travel.
